Description
Ca. AD 800 - 1000 A Viking iron arrowhead with a large swallowtail point, primarily for use against animals but extremely adaptable for use in a military context. Archery played a significant role in Viking culture. Viking bows were typically made from strong and flexible woods such as yew, ash, or elm. The bows were often longbows, designed to be powerful and accurate over long distances. Arrows were usually made from wood with iron arrowheads. The shafts were usually made from woods like birch or pine, and the fletchings, the feathers at the end of the arrow, were typically made from bird feathers, commonly goose. Size: 100mm x 70mm; Weight: 25g Provenance: Prince collection, 1990s-2014; Ex. Private collection 1970s-1990s.
